You've come to the right place, let us explain.
Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) refers to pain in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) or jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement. It encompasses a cluster of symptoms, including pain in the jaw, head, and face; tenderness; clicking; grinding; and limited movement in the temporomandibular joint. These symptoms can lead to an overall decrease in function and quality of life.
The causes of TMD are multifactorial and can include trauma, one's biology, social behavior, teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism), arthritis, stress, poor posture, and misalignment of the teeth or jaw.
How Physical Therapy Can Help You
Manual Therapy
To decrease pain and clicking, manual therapy is performed on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and neck. Joint and soft tissue mobilizations are important for correcting abnormal movement patterns and normalizing the length-tension relationship of muscles that cause TMD
Therapeutic Exercise
TMD often involves dysfunction or imbalance in the muscles that control jaw movement. Therapeutic exercises can help rehabilitate and strengthen these muscles, promoting better function and reducing symptoms such as pain and clicking.
Education
Education is paramount to success of the patient. To decrease pain, overactivity of muscles and malposition of the jaw, education is provided on posture, ergonomics, sleep positioning, and minimize parafunctional habits and behaviors.
